Frequently Asked Questions About Art Reproductions and Prints
The most frequently asked questions are about the technical differences between various types of art prints and reproductions.
In addition to my fluctuating inventory of original paintings, my studio is proud to offer the largest selection of unique tropical images available anywhere.
- Art Definitions -
Giclay (zee-clay) is French for "sprayed ink". It is the most modern method of art reproduction. An original painting is digitally captured with a high resolution camera called a "Phase One" and then transferred to a computer with special color management software. Then a large inkjet printer sprays the UV stable, pigmented inks on the artist's choice of media. The resulting continuous tone, intense color is unparalleled.
This is the original artist's handmade interpretation as a "one of" work of art. In Shari Erickson's case, her original paintings are oil paint on canvas or panels.
ORIGINAL PRINT OR SERIGRAPH
This is a genuine, traditional print created by the artist, by hand, using a classic stencil process.
Not a handmade traditional lithograph print. Also called Photomechanical reproduction or Photo-Lithography. The original art is photographed, separated into 4 colors, and printed on paper by an offset lithography machine press. Examined closely you can see the tiny dot patterns of the four colors.
The subject is digitally captured, tweaked in the computer, then chemically printed on emulsion enhanced paper. The continuous tone color is saturated and accurate.
OPEN EDITION PRINT
Prints and reproductions are published either as a limited edition of a pre-set quantity, or, an open edition with no predetermined number. I don't limit editions so we can accomodate our collectors' requests for custom sizes and applications.
